Just like traditional counseling you will spend time describing your concerns, including how the issue is affecting your life and causing you distress. I may respond by asking some additional questions to better understand you and your history. You will answer with additional information and details about your situation. Together we will come up with a mutual understanding of what the problems are and what our goals will be. Then I will begin helping you take steps to meet those goals.
Some problems are clinical conditions like depression, anxiety, or post trauma stress. Some problems are events like losing a job, discovering infidelity, the death of a loved one, or a child who is failing school. Some problems are interpersonal issues; problems with in-laws, stepchildren, a spouse. Other problems are more at the level of personality and growth; becoming assertive in the work place, forgiving an injustice, making a career change, finding courage to make an important change. Counseling can help all these life difficulties.
